When you play blackjack in a casino, the dealer can't take cash bets. In order to place a blackjack bet, you have to exchange your cash into chips with the dealer.
While a game is in progress, you can't ask a dealer to change your cash into chips. You have to wait for the right time after a blackjack game before joining a table and asking for an exchange.
For some casinos, you cue for joining the blackjack game and exchanging your cash into chips is after the previous game. For other casinos, you may have to wait until the dealer starts shuffling the decks of cards before you can sit at the table and join the blackjack game.
The blackjack chips are color-coded. The colors are standard in almost every casino. Red is for the five dollar blackjack chips. One of the things that you need to remember when exchanging your chips is that you shouldn't hand over your money to the blackjack dealer. This is a casino rule implemented for security purposes. This is done to make sure nothing except cash and chips were traded between you and the blackjack dealer. To get chips from the blackjack dealer, what you have to do is to place your cash on the blackjack table and the dealer will pick that and place the chips on the table.
The blackjack dealer will not give you change so you'd better place the exact amount on the blackjack table.
